Description in original language:
Grazing is an important conservation tool for grassland management across Europe. Sheep grazing is an essential way of care of the residues of steppe habitats, whilst cattle grazing is the main way of maintenance non-forest ecosystems especially in less favoured areas. The impact of grazing and grassland maintenance on insect orders and spiders has been the subject of many studies. The vast majority of these studies analysed impact of grazing intensity (non-grazed, sparsely grazed, intensively grazed) on arthropod assemblages or compared other maintenance methods (e.g., mowing x grazing, strip mowing x continual mowing). Main aim of our study was comparison of spider assemblages on sheep and cattle pastures with similar intensity, in the same location and with similar abiotic and biotic properties. The hypothesis of our study was that differences in the way of grazing between cattle and sheep affect diversity and abundance of spiders. Pitfall traps were used for collecting samples. Many typical species for open habitats including agrobionts were present, rare species occurred infrequently. Statistical methods showed that there is no difference in diversity of species between cattle and sheep pasture. However β-diversity is significantly higher in sheep pastures. It seems that small areas of nongrazed vegetation in combination with bare ground, as a typical feature of intensive sheep pasture are the reason for this β-diversity richness. Also the abundance of some species was higher in favour of sheep pasture.
