Description in original language: Aeshna juncea (Linnaeus, 1758) is a robust Holarctic dragonfly species. In Europe, it occurs from middle altitudes up to the mountains, in the south it becomes sparser confined to the higher altitudes. The species is a typical inhabitant of forest ponds, acidic meadows and peatbogs with a three or four years development time. The aim of this study was to analyse and compare the size of 19 particular morphological features of exuviae (abandoned skin after larva hatched) of the species from different types of habitats to find out the morphological response to different altitudes. Three localities were situated in Iran (2,500 m a. s. l.), France (Alps) and the Netherlands (13 m a. s. l.) respectively, from where in different years we collected 50 specimens (25 ♂♂, 25♀♀). The most stable trait was the width of head. In general we found out that the abdominal appendices and spines were bigger on the specimens originated from Iran, but the width of head, the minimal width of prementum (visible part of the labium after contraction) and the length of prementum were bigger at European populations. Surprisingly, the overall body size where bigger at the Iranian populations. The Bergmann cline in poikilothermic insects are still difficult to predict. The exuviae from extreme altitudes and scarce trophic conditions from Iran reacted with Bergmann's rule (increased body size with altitude or latitude) which is in contradiction with the empirical experience that larger species with longer development times tend to have smaller body sizes.
