The dissertation will explore how, to what extent, and in which areas can Systems Engineering (SE) and Business Engineering (BE) interact for exploiting the possibilities in Industry 4.0 business models. Since SE has mostly stressed by the technical side of various projects, it seems that it and can quickly adapt to Industry 4.0 projects. On the other hand, human, process, economic, or social aspects need to be considered for reaching higher objectives besides technology. The methodical aspects of business development based on technology are expected to be increasingly more important. It is expected that the role of SE will change significantly as value creation relates to the ability for identifying the innovation opportunities and on available capacities and their ideal exploitation in business performance. As a result of the dissertation, a holistic framework for the employment of SE in Industry 4.0 will be developed.
