Spiders play an important role in controlling fruit tree pests. One possible way to increase spider predation pressure is to increase spider abundance on fruit trees. This can be achieved if different agroecosystems are set in a heterogeneous landscape with elements of suitable habitats representing the source areas for the agroecosystems. However, increased abundance of natural enemies does not necessarily lead to an increase in predation pressure. This may be because heterogeneous landscape can also increase pest abundance and / or increase interference between natural enemies, which significantly reduces predation pressure on the pest. In addition, the abundance of alternative prey than a given pest may increase and is favored by natural enemies. The aim of the research will be to determine whether the heterogeneity of the landscape increases the predatory pressure of spiders on selected pests of orchards. The influence of landscape heterogeneity on predation pressure will be investigated using a combination of direct field observations, molecular analysis of stomach content, laboratory experiments and statistical and mathematical modeling. Students acquire practical skills and knowledge related to biocontrol. The thesis will also be supervised by Radek Michalko, Ph.D.
