Aims of the course:
Introduction to development studies. Basic concepts, research methods,indexes, how to measure development and democracy, major theories, social, historical, economic, political and cultural aspects of development. Performance of developing policies of the most important international organizations (UN, OECD, WB, IMF)and the EU. Major developing regions, BRICS countries and their economic and political importance. Integrating development issues in contemporary world development - the increasing role of globalization, transnational and sub-state actors, problems of demographic development and migration, the increasing importance of development aid in developed countries. The importance of non-governmental organizations, the role of Czech Republic in providing development assistance, the most important projects. Main topics of the development of 21st century.

7.Main developing regions-Africa, Asia, Latin America. Emerging developing superpowers - India and China. (allowance 3/3)
8.EU development policy (allowance 2/1)
9.The Czech Republic and development (allowance 2/1)
10.International governmental and nongovernmental organizations and development (allowance 2/1)
 
Learning outcomes and competences:
Generic competences:
 
-ability to analyse and synthesize

Specific competences:
 
-Awareness of the developing world’s problems
-Familiarity with environmental, demographic and migration trends and their economic and social impacts in developing countries
-Knowledge of the development policies of the EU, the international organizations and the Czech Republic
-Knowledge of the main issues, problems and documents of the development relief
-Knowledge of the effectiveness of development aid and of the policy coherence for development
-Knowledge of the major development problems in the developing regions

Assessment methods:
Individual tasks, discussion and activity on the seminars, presentation in group. Final exam through credit test, combination of open and closed questions.
