Aims of the course:
To demonstrate basic possibilities of using demographic methods in dealing with fundamental problems in the economic and social sphere at a regional, national and international level and, finally, to contribute to understanding the demographic and social aspects of development. To elucidate basic sources, flows and ways of the evaluation of data on the population situation and processes.
Course contents:
1.Demographic theory (allowance 4/2)
a.Concept, subject and historical development of demography
b.Importance of demographic population structure for demography, economy and social sciences

2.Demographic analysis (allowance 8/10)
a.Demographic statics (analysis of the population status: categories, societies, structure and distribution)
b.Demographic dynamics (natural, mechanical and social movement of population)
c.Demographic regionalization and typologization

3.Basic forecasts of the demographic structure of population (allowance 10/10)
a.Projections of the population development of an area, of a town region and of a housing estate
b.Projections of the population development of a rural region
c.Predictions of labour sources, school and pre-school quotas, economically active population, the number and structure of families and households, educational and health capacities, population layers and groups

4.Demography and international communities (allowance 6/6)
a.The development of world population and predictions of the further development
b.Migration movements of population
c.Analyses and modelling the population distribution and the residential structure of a country

Learning outcomes and competences:

Specific competences:
-Ability to be concerned in creation and utilization of demographic prognosis
-Ability to evaluate data on population situation and regional popupation processes
-Ability to identify and utilize suitable sources of information in defining problem solutions and support the proposed solutions.

Assessment methods:
Fulfilment of conditions for credit (obligatory attendance in seminars, project submission and its presentation in seminar group). Written and oral exam. For participation in oral exam, written exam must be fulfilled at least 60%. Total grade results from both parts of the exams.
