Aim of the course and learning outcomes:
Demonstrate the ability to apply basic genetic patterns including molecular genetics to practical applications in plant breeding.
 
Course content:
1.
General genetics (allowance 0/0)
 
a.
Mendelian principles of segregation, and combination. Interaction of alleles of the same gene.
b.
Interaction of alleles of different genes: epistasis, inhibition, complementarity, multiplicity.
c.The nature of quantitative characters. Additive system, interactions in polygene systems. Genetic and nongenetic variability. Heterosis, the combination abilities.
d.
The gene linkage and its estimation. The principles of linkage mapping. Sex determination on chromosomal a gene level. The linked characters.
e.Genotypic and phenotypic structure of the population. Hardy-Weinberg balance. The systematic processes and dispersion process within populations.

2.
Introduction and basics of molecular genetics (allowance 0/0)
 
a.The structure of the NA, the genetic code, the central dogma. Replication and expression of the eukaryotic genome. The regulation of expression.
b.
The Organization of eukaryotic genome, the particularities of the genome of the higher plants.

3.
Basic concepts and classic breeding practices (allowance 0/0)
 
a.
Genetic structure of the cultivar, the basic approach of the breeding process, genetic resources, techniques, and procedures.
b.
Techniques and methods of selection. Selection procedures for self-pollinated, for cross-pollinated, vegetatively propagated plůant species. The particularities of the biennial and perennial species.
c.
The nature of heterosis, use heterosis in plant breeding, The breeding approach of F1 hybrids. Pollen sterility, genetic determination of male sterility, the use of male sterility in plant breeding of F1 hybrids.

4.Alternative and new selection procedures (allowance 0/0)
 
a.
Induced mutagenesis, mutagens, application methods.
b.Distant hybridization, the causes of noncrossability of the species, and the possibility of overcoming it, properties of distant hybrids.
c.
Characteristics of the polyploids, the use of polyploidy in plant breeding, the method of obtaining polyploids in the breeding, use of aneuploids and haploids in plant breeding.
d.
Breeding on resistance to diseases and pests, genetic nature resistance.
e.
The use of gene manipulation in plant breeding, the basic strategy of gene manipulation, transgenosis, transgenic plants, DNA fingerprinting. Use of genetically modified plants.
