Aim of the course and learning outcomes:
To get know to do the production analysis, to determine needed operations, necessary for the production of given volume and assortment of sawn timber, to design the general concetpion, corresponding machines and level of mechanization, to consider the correlations and influences of the operations. To get know to engineer and expertise the projects of sawmills and sawn timber yards and their parts, its technological equipment, layout and respect the flow of work of subsequent technological parts.
Course content:
Conception of the sawmills - basic types, properties, advantages and disadvantages depending on the volume and assortment of production. (allowance 2/0)
Production. Volume of production, assortment of processed logs and produced sawn timber. Production analysis, choice of the sawmill conception. Mechanization type and level, connection with volume and asssortment of produced sawn timber and with the sawmil equipment. (allowance 6/4)
Layout of the sawmills.
Technology in front of sawmills, operations, connections with the log yard.
Operations in the sawmill, ways of their carrying out in the connection with the volume and assortment of production. Machines and mechanization, their properties and suitability of application. Solution of sawmill layout according to volume and assortment of the production, to the preceded and following technological parts and to the layout of the mill.

Sorting and final preparing of the sawn timber.
Operations, ways of their carrying out (mesuring, grading, sorting, trimming, marking, piling, wrapping, record keeping) according to the volume and assortment of production. Equipment and layout of sorters and lines for final preparing and make-up of the sawn timber.

5.Sawn timber yards.
Volumes of stored sawn timber, ways of storage. Proportion of dry/wet sawn timber, ways of drying, choice of the suitable way of drying and type of drying kilns. Organization and layout of sawn timber yards. Types of mechanization, their properties, suitability, influence on the organization of storage.

General layout of the mill.
Parts of the mill, production and non-production parts (power station, maintenance, administration). Wastes, their usability, treatment. Transport, its types, routes, volumes, distances, continuity.

Assessment methods:
Credit - elaborating and defence of the above mentioned project is required. The extend of the project is about 20 pages of technical report and 10 - 15 pages A4 of drawings.
Exam - oral with written preparation (notices, drawing of layout of technolofical part, machine etc.). 3 questions from the areas: technology of production, machinery, sorting and storage of sawn timber. The preparation takes approx. 25 minutes, the exam takes the same time.
