Aims of the course:
The course focuses on acquiring knowledge of theory and application of methods of technical diagnostics of motor vehicles and their respective assemblies, knowledge of diagnostic equipment and trends in diagnosis of motor vehicles. These skills are necessary for optimal decision making about the need and extent of repairs, to ensure efficiency and environmental performance of their operation and management of service and repair operations.
Course contents:
1.Introduction to automotive diagnostics (allowance 1/0)
a.Diagnostics in varoius areas of human activity.

2.Diagnostic systems for vehicles. (allowance 2/2)
a.Terms and definitions of technical diagnostics.
b.Objective and subjective methods of diagnostics.
c.Diagnostic systems, models and procedures.
d.Simple and branch diagnostic procedures related to a specific trouble, an optimal procedure for the use of available technical instrumentation.

3.Diagnosis of gasoline engines, pollution measurement. (allowance 2/3)
a.Diagnostics of mechanical parts of engines.
b.Technical endoscopy.
c.Measurement of engine power, the results evaluation.
d.Methods for determining the engine compression pressure.
e.The quality of the combustion process - the measurement of pollutants in exhaust gases.

4.Diagnostics and adjustment of ignition systems and other electrical equipment. (allowance 2/2)
a.Diagnostics of conventional ignition.
b.Methods of testing of electronic ignition systems.
c.Oscillograms of primary and secondary ignition circuit.
d.Diagnostics of sensors and actuators in ignition system.

5.Diagnostics of gasoline engine fuel systems. (allowance 2/2)
a.Symptoms of malfunction in the fuel systems of gasoline engines.
b.Diagnostics of feedback mixture control.
c.Diagnosis of catalytic systems.
d.Diagnostic system for fuel strategy in operation conditions simulated on a chassis dynamometer.
e.Readiness codes monitoring.
f.Functional testing of engine control systems.

6.Diagnostics and measurement of diesel engine emissions. (allowance 2/3)
a.Diagnostics of mechanical parts of diesel engine.
b.Measuring procedures according to authorized institutions.
c.Evaluation of the combustion in a simulated load on a chassis dynamometer.
d.Engine power as a diagnostic parameter.
e.Diagnostic systems reducing particulate matter.

7.Diagnostics of diesel engine fuel system. (allowance 2/2)
a.Diagnostics of inline injection system.
b.Diagnostics of plunger injection systems (axial, radial distribution).
c.Injector testing.
d.Common Rail testing.
e.The PDE system testing.
f.Compression test using functional test procedure of disabled injection.

8.Diagnostics of hydraulic and pneumatic systems of vehicles. (allowance 2/2)
a.Diagnostics of air brakes and suspension systems of trucks.
b.Diagnostics of hydraulic clutch control systems.
c.Diagnostics of hydro-pneumatic suspension.

9.Diagnostics of chassis and vehicle brakes. (allowance 2/2)
a.Diagnostics of mechanical chassis systems - axles, steering, brakes.
b.Diagnostics of regulation of electric and electrohydraulic power steering.
c.Chassis geometry adjustment.
d.Wheels and wheel balancing.
e.Diagnostics of shock absorbers and suspension.
f.Diagnostics of the brake system.
g.Testing of brake support systems - ABS, ESP etc.

10.Vibrodignostics (allowance 1/1)
a.Signal analysis - the use of DFT and FFT.
b.Analysis of vibration.
c.Acoustic signals.

11.Diagnostics of electronic systems used in vehicles. (allowance 2/2)
a.Diagnostic procedures for actuators testing.
b.Diagnostics of sensors and sensor clusters.
c.Parallel diagnostics - signal simulation.
d.Diagnostics of on-board networks - CAN-BUS, LIN etc.
e.Disturbance in communication networks.

12.On-board diagnostics. (allowance 2/2)
a.On-board diagnostics - OBD.
b.Protocols of on-board diagnostics.
c.Virtual system of on-board diagnostics.

13.Ecological and economic aspects of the diagnostics and future. (allowance 1/0)
a.Evaluation of economic efficiency of diagnostics.
b.Environmental hazards of diagnostics.

14.Innovation in diagnostics (allowance 1/1)
Learning outcomes and competences:

-The student is able to produce branched diagnostic procedures.
-The student is well versed in testing technical systems.

Year of study: Not applicable - the subject could be chosen at anytime during the course of the programme.
Work placement: There is no compulsory work placement in the course unit.

Assessment methods:
Elaboration of essay on a selected topic and its presentation.
The course is finished with oral exam. Requirements before oral exam: Active participation in at least 70% of class seminars and submission of all required homework (with passing grade). For passing oral exam student has to demonstrate at least 60% of requirement knowledes and skills. Circuits to exam are public and respect the content of syllabus.
