Aims of the course:
A goal of the course is to introduce main techniques and principles that are used in non-destructive evaluation and assessment of wood and wooden constructions, different materials eventually. The emphasis will be put on principles and practical use of tools for non-destructive testing of wood.
Course contents:
1.Significance, classification and history of non-destructive testing of wood and timber constructions. Methods of non-destructive testing of wood. (allowance 2/0)
2.Optical non-destructive methods - history, classification and presentation of the most used methods. Digital Image Correlation (DIC) and its Applications. (allowance 2/0)
3.Current semi-destructive methods used in-situ - resistography, pin pushing perpendicular to grain and pushing the jaws apart along the grain. (allowance 2/0)
4.Fractometry and videoscopy. (allowance 2/0)
5.Tensile testing on micro-samples. Drilling in the bore and testing of radial bores. (allowance 2/0)
6.Acoustic methods - introduction to acoustics, classification of acoustic methods. Tools for transmitting acoustic signal (Arborsonic, FDD 2d, FDD 3d). (allowance 2/0)
7.Methods on movement detection - accelerometers, tensiometers and extensometers. (allowance 2/0)
8.Roentgen tomography (X-ray CT). Neutron imaging, electrical impedance tomography. (allowance 2/0)
9.Non-destructive methods operating in infrared spectrum – thermo-vision systems (allowance 2/0)

Assessment methods:
To pass the course (getting credits), one needs to write and defend his/her seminar work. A topic of the seminar work has to be discussed and approved by one of the course teachers. Further, successfully pass knowledge test of the subject topics.
