Aim of the course and learning outcomes:
Introduction to the cytology, anatomy, morphology and physiology of higher plants with main focus on trees. After absolving this course student will be able to describe processes which influence tree growth from the cell to the tree level. This knowledge will be useful in further study of the forest ecosystem.
 
Course content:
1.
1. Cytology (allowance 3/2)
 
a.
Prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.
b.Structural characteristics of plant cells with attention to the cell wall, nucleus, plastids, mitochondria, endoplasmatic complex and cytoskeleton.
c.
The importance of compartmental organization.

2.
Histology (allowance 3/3)
 
a.Primary and secondary meristems, cell division and diferentiation.
b.
Types of plant cells and tissues. Simple and complex tissues. Tissue systems: meristems, epidermal, water-conducting and ground tissues, their structure and functions.

3.
Root (allowance 2/2)
 
a.
Primary tissues of roots: stele (radial vascular bundle), root cortex, endodermis, rhizodermis.
b.
Primary growth of roots, root tip and root cap. Pericycle and production of lateral roots. Root hairs.

4.
Stem (allowance 1/3)
 
a.
Primary tissues of stems: primary growth of shoots. Terminal bud, shoot tipand leaf primordia. Turn of vascular bundles to colateral ones in hypocotyll.
b.
Terminal bud, shoot tipand leaf primordia. Turn of vascular bundles to colateral ones in hypocotyll.

5.
Leaf and secondary growth (allowance 1/3)
 
a.
Anatomy of leaf: mesophyll, epidermis with guard cells, venation.
b.
Secondary growth: lateral meristems - vascular and cork cambium.
c.Secondary tissues of stems, heteroxylic and homoxylic secondary xylem. Cork, phelloderm, periderm. Secondary tissues of roots, specific foundation of vascular cambium in root stele. Location of primary and secondary xylem.

Assessment methods:
The course is finished after following points are fulfill - compulsory participation on practical lessons, creation of protocols from practical lessons, written test from practical lesson (composed from practical - anatomical description of micropictures - and theoretical part). Exam has to part - written test (30 minutes) and oral exam. Student has to answer at least 50% of asked questions to past the exam.
