Aims of the course:
In this course, students will acquire basic theoretical knowledge and practical skills concerning metallic and non-metallic materials used for manufacturing of machines and equipment for agriculture, food industry and transportation. This knowledge can be used when designing various machines, renewing of machine parts and evaluating quality and reliability of machines and other equipment.

1.General theory of metals (allowance 2/2)
a.Crystalline construction of metals
b.Phase transformations of metals and alloys

2.Basic crystalline grids (allowance 2/2)
a.Binary equilibrium diagrams
b.Imperfections, defects in crystallisation

3.Material tests (allowance 2/2)
a.Mechanical destructive tests, tensile force, pressure, bending
b.Mechanical non-destructive tests ultrasound, capillary tests

4.Metallographic tests (allowance 2/2)
a.Preparation of metallographic samples
b.Principles of microscopy

5.Iron alloys (allowance 2/2)
a.Equilibrium diagram of Fe-Fe3C
b.Equilibrium diagram of Fe-C

6.Heat treatment of iron alloys (allowance 2/2)
a.Austenitization of steels
b.Basic structural phase of ferrite, perlite

7.Transformation diagrams (allowance 2/2)
a.Isothermal decay of austenite
b.Anisothermic decay of austenite

8.Heat treatment of steels (allowance 2/2)

-Ability to design a construction material and heat treatment for machinery and equipment
-Ability to design a technology of production and technology of renovation of machine parts made from specific material

-Ability to determine the basic mechanical properties of materials and determine their influence on the operational reliability of machines
-Ability to seletct the appropriate materials for constructions of machines and equipment
-General knowledge of material engineering

Assessment methods:
Credit is awarded after successful completion of two written tests (at least 60% success rate). The test includes a written part (at least 50% success rate), didactic test on the computer (min. 60% success rate) and an oral part, where the student draws two or three questions. It also examines the understanding of the training programs in the field of construction materials.
