Aims of the course:
In this course, students will acquire general and specific knowledge in the domain of ethology of horse. After finishing this course, students will be oriented in problems concerning individual components of horse behaviour and welfare.
Course contents:
1.Importance and development of ethology as an independent scientific discipline (allowance 1/1)
a.History of ethology. Development of ethology and its relation to other scientific disciplines. Relationship between ethology and ethics of animal husbandry. Principles of ethological studies. Ethological studies and their use in applied ethology

2.Sources of life activities, basic forms of animal behaviour (allowance 1/1)
a.Neuro-sensory activities. Chemical effects. Inherited behaviour and instincts, learned behaviour, forms of learning. Classification of life activities, biorythms

3.Activity of horse (allowance 8/8)
a.Eating behaviour, Comfort behaviour. Social behaviour, games and social relationships among animals, territorial behaviour. Sexual behaviour, aggressivity. Maternal behaviour. Special forms of behaviour

4.Welfare and legislation (allowance 2/2)
a.Welfare and handling of horse. New data about animal welfare and their application in horse husbandry. Direct and indirect protection of horse.

-A capability to analyse symptom of horse behaviour
-A capability to apply correct handling, transport of horse
-Ability apply knowledge about behaviour animals in different breeding conditions and their application in breeding horse
-Knowledge about basic requirement of horse
-Knowledge about ethic and ethologic principles of horse breeding
-Knowledge about ontogenesis of behaviour, occurrence of atypical forms of horse behaviour

Assessment methods:
For Credit you have to receive minimal 80 % participation on exercising, submission and tenable of a seminar work during the semester (min. 70 % points). Examination from subject is oral (60 % of the total mark).
