Aims of the course:
Knowledge of trees and shrubs as living organisms, creating especially native forests or man-made outplantings, tree species important from the viewpoint of landscape planing. Identifying important tree species, according to morphological characters and rightly named their by the scientific nomenclature. Knowledge of using the trees.
 
Course contents:
1.Basic dendrology (allowance 6/6)
 
a.The content, scope and role of forest dendrology
b.Taxonomy of conifers and broadleafs
c.Ecological relations of trees
d.Practicals: 1) Morphology of trees and shrubs, 2) Conifers I, 3) Conifers II

2.Basic fytogeography (allowance 6/6)
 
a.Chorology, native renges of trees, migration
b.Vegetation zones (Boreal and central European forests, mediterranean, subtropical and tropical forests)
c.Altitudial vegetation belts
d.Practicals:4)Fagaceae, Oleaceae, Ulmaceae. 5)Betulaceae, Tiliaceae, Aceraceae, Juglandaceae, Tamaricaceae, Eleagnaceae, Magnoliaceae, Vitaceae, Aquifoliaceae, Anacardiaceae, Celastraceae, 6) Salicaceae, Solanaceae, Rutaceae, Ericaceae, Bignoniaceae.

3.Systematic survey and distribution of coniferous and broadleaved species in various communities of the Czech Republic (Woody vegetation of the CR) (allowance 10/10)
 
a.Woods communities of floodplain forests and springs.
b.Woods communities of peat bogs. Natural pine forests
c.Woods communities of thermophilous oak forests and forest-steppes
d.Woods communities of deciduous forests of hills.
e.Woods communities of mixed and coniferous forests of mountains, the upper treeline and alpine zones

4.Trees introduction , the practical importance of trees (allowance 6/6)
 
a.History and importance of introduction trees and shrubs. The most common introduced species, with an emphasis on invasive and domesticated species. Southern Europe, Mediterranean, Middle East. Asia. North America.
b.Development of woody vegetation in holocene
c.The importance of trees to humans. Man influence on the treesPractical use, past and present, Trees and laws.
d.12)Fabaceae, Caesalpiniaceae, Platanaceae, Moraceae, 13)Seminar - oral presentation of seminar works. Consultation and repeat. 14) Credit - practical determination of trees

Generic competences:
 
-Ability to analyse and synthesize

Specific competences:
 
-Ability of determination and solving of woody plants using in landscape
-Analysing and solving of problems of species composition of given site
-Competence to design a suitable combination of trees for planting in the landscape
-Knowledge of domestic and common cultivated woody species
-Knowledge of ecological needs of woody species
-The ability to identify woody species using morphological characteristics
