Aim of the course and learning outcomes:
Knowledge of the requirements for utility properties of structural materials, knowledge of relationships between the chemical constitution of the material, its production technology and processing, microstructure and properties. Obtaining the skills of modern methods of engineering design in the design of materials for specific application in engineering practice. Ability to select suitable material based on the shape and function of požadovné function that is required from the material.
Course content:
Introduction to the course (dotation 2/2) (allowance 2/2)
a) Bionics - what a technician can learn from the nature
b) Special fibers - fabrics and man

Fundamental groups of materials -- metals, metal alloys, ceramics, polymers, glasses and composites (dotation 4/4) (allowance 4/4)
a) Physical principles of material stiffness and strength
b) Inner structure of anorganic materials
c) Structural principles of natural materials -- oriented structures in 1-D, 2-D and 3-D

Mechanics of constructional materials -- elasticity, strength and toughness, hardness; fracture of materials, fatigue, creep (dotation 2/2) (allowance 2/2)
Design of material and constructional members (dotation 6/6) (allowance 6/6)
Structure, properties and use of particular material groups (dotation 12/12) (allowance 12/12)
a) Ion, covalent and composite ceramics
b) Organic, oxide and unoxide glasses
c) Metals and metal and non-metal alloys
d) Polymers and elastomers
e) Particulate and fiber composites
f.f) Composite material based on wood -- wood-plastic composites
