Aims of the course:
The knowledge of macroscopic and microscopic wood structure (including practical identification of wood species). Overview of basic wood properties of wood species of subtropical and tropical areas with an emphasis to their practical utilization.

3.Wood anatomy (allowance 4/2)
4.Factors affecting phloemo- and xylogenesis (allowance 2/0)
5.Wood defects (allowance 2/2)
6.Physical and mechanical properties of wood overview (allowance 6/0)
7.Non-destructive and destructive methods in wood quality assessment (allowance 2/0)
8.Effect of forest treatments on wood quality (allowance 2/0)
9.Wood structure relations to biomechanics of tree (allowance 2/0)
10.Basics of wood preservations (allowance 2/0)
11.Characteristic of tropical and subtropical forest (allowance 0/4)
12.Tropical timber trade (allowance 0/2)
13.Selected tropical wood species from Africa (allowance 0/8)
14.Selected tropical wood species from South-Eastern Asia (allowance 0/6)
15.Selected tropical wood species from South and Latin America (allowance 0/6)

- 2 tests during the course (max. 40 points for both tests, required at least 21 points)
- practical test of wood identification -- macroscopic samples of the most important tropical woods (at least 8 of 10 samples)
- seminar work -- identification of unknown samples of tropical woods on microscopic level

part 2: oral exam
