Aims of the course:
Knowledge of trees and shrubs as living organisms, creating especially native forests or man-made outplantings, tree species important from the viewpoint of forestry. Identifying important tree species, according to morphological characters and rightly named their by the scientific nomenclature. Knowledge of using the trees.
 
Course contents:
1.Basic dendrology (allowance 6/9)
 
a.The content, scope and role of forest dendrology
b.Taxonomy of conifers and broadleafs
c.Ecological relations of trees in forest stands
d.Practical: 1) Morphology of trees, 2)conifers I, 3)conifers II

2.Basic fytogeography (allowance 6/9)
 
a.Chorology, native renges of trees, migration
b.Vegetation zones (Boreal and central European forests, mediterranean, subtropical and tropical forests)
c.Altitudial vegetation belts
d.Practical:4)Fagaceae, Oleaceae, Ulmaceae. 5)Betulaceae, Tiliaceae, Aceraceae, 6)Juglandaceae, Tamaricaceae, Eleagnaceae, Magnoliaceae, Vitaceae, Aquifoliaceae, Anacardiaceae, Celastraceae.

3.Woody plant of Europe and the Czech Republic (allowance 8/12)
 
a.Development of woody species on the territory of the CR in the postglacial period
b.Introduction of trees - arborescent species and their potential use for forestry and landscape management in Central Europe
c.Using of trees, man influence on the trees. Tree species specially protected by Law

- Knowledge of ecological needs of woody species
-Ability to distinguish species important in forestry for various management regime.
-Competence to design a suitable combination of trees for planting in the forest and landscape
-Knowledge of abiotic and biotic factors limiting or threatening the existence of forests
-Knowledge of domestic and common cultivated woody species
-The ability to identify woody species using morphological characteristics
-The ability to work in terrain

Assessment methods:
- submission of a seminar work during the semester
- 3 written tests on the Latin names of species will be during the course. (3 x 25 pictures, maximum points for each test is 100, so maximal total receive points could be 300. To advance the practical knowledge of species is necessary to have at least 200 points . )
Credit - practical knowledge of tree species: determinated 80% species from each group
1. Broadleaves according to herbarium specimens (memorized all kinds of exercises)
2. Conifers - fresh branches (memorized all kinds of exercises)
3. Twigs in winter (Buds)
4. Cones, fruits and seeds of conifers and broadleaves
5. Wood with bark and bark

- final examination (length of about 20/15 minutes, written test (60% of the total mark) / oral 40% . A list of test circuits is available in the Document Server UIS
