Course title: General Demography

Course objective:
The purpose of the subject is to give students basic knowledge in the field of Demography. Introduce them to its meaning and its use in all spheres and levels of management of state and public administration and municipalities, the business, commercial and industrial or non-profit sectors, as well as in a number of institutions. Present students with basic demographic methods and explain the context of social changes and their impact on demographic behavior of the population in different regions.
 
Course content:
1.Demographic theory (allowance 4/2)
 
a.Concept, subject and historical development of demography
b.Methodological apparatus of present demography: importance of demographic population structure for demography, economy and social sciences
c.Fundamentals of biometrical models and their theoretical and practical meaning

2.Demographic analysis (allowance 10/12)
 
a.Demographic statics (categories, societies, structure and location of population status)
b.Demographic dynamics (population and vital statistics, migration)
c.Synthetic indices of population reproduction

3.Demographic forecast (allowance 8/8)
 
a.Typology of population forecasts
b.Techniques of population forecasts
c.Techniques of derived forecasts

4.Demographic synthesis (allowance 6/6)
 
a.Dynamic processes in population
b.Basic problems of economic and social demography
c.Demographic methods in theory and practice of national economy
d.Basic trends in the population development of the Czech Republic and the world

Course completion:
Conditions of credit:
- 1st written test in the middle of semester (at least 70% fulfillment).
- 2nd written test at the end of semester (at least 70% fulfillment).
- If 70% of continuous tests are not met, at the end of the semester will be a written test of the whole course (at least 70% fulfillment).
- obligatory presentation in pairs on the assigned theme; Presentation scored (content level, formal treatment, quality of speech, etc .; fulfillment min. 50%).
- The overall assessment of the work in the exercise will be a bonus for the exam.

Exam conditions:
- Exam written (min 70% fulfilling).
 
Course methods: Lectures (frontal instruction, discussion, media use)
Exercise (work in groups, use PC program Excel, individual work, discussion, oral presentation).
Individual consultation.

Total 56 hours, of which 28 hours of lectures and 14 hours of practice.
