Course title: Integration Processes of Agrarian Sector

Course objective:
The aim is to acquaint students with economic implications of globalization and integration processes in agrarian sector, with causes and impacts of agribusiness formation and their impact on the new model of agriculture in the framework of commodity verticals.
Acquire knowledge and apply methodological approaches to studying specific commodity chain dynamics in the development of regional and global agricultural markets.
 
Course content:
1.Globalization and its impact on development in the agrarian sector (allowance 8/4)
 
a.Expressions of globalization in the agrarian sector
b.Specifics of agricultural production and foodstuffs consumption in shaping of agricultural markets, types of markets, entities, links, categories
c.Agribusiness - the basic theory, the demand and supply determined models

2.Economic context of integration of agriculture with other sector in the framework of agribusiness (allowance 12/16)
 
a.Forms and consequences of imperfect competition in agribusiness
b.Principle of commodity verticals and networks, market structure, approaches for expressions of market forces
c.Coordination of activities, the framework and the role of contracts: approaches in terms of ownership, transaction costs and sharing / reduction of risk

3.The application of commodity exchanges in agribusiness (allowance 4/4)
 
a.The role of commodity exchanges in agribusiness, specifics
b.World trade center, stock exchange contracts, pricing and value of contracts
c.Possibilities of trading of agricultural commodities, hedging against price changes

Course completion:
The subject is terminated with verbal examination. Credit is given on the basis of student activity during tutorials, participation on discussions about particular topics and presentation of seminar paper. Students have to obtain the credit before examination.
 
Course methods: The course will be taught through lectures and seminars successive to the extent of three lessons a week for one semester. During the seminars, students should acquire the methodology of exploring agribusiness commodity chain, analyze the specified commodity chain, present it and defend the acquired knowledge.
