Course title: Economic Geography and Social Aspects of EU Membership
Semester: WS 2013/2014

Course objective:
The course intends to provide in-depth analysis of selected economic, social and political aspects of EU integration and EU membership from the point of view of both individual Member States and European Union as a whole.

Strong emphasis is given on linking various topics so that students get overall picture of how different factors influence each other. These factors can be: economic growth, demography of today's EU, "debt crisis" of today's EU, eurozone cohesion etc.

1.European integration - the introduction (allowance 4/2)
 
a.The basic information about the course and its structure
b.The most important motives and goals for european integration after WW2
c.Geographic enlargement of the European Union (from 6 to 27)

2.Economic integration - from FTA to political union (?) (allowance 2/2)
 
a."Integration pyramid" and the explanation of all its steps
b.The overview of historical moments of economic cooperation among nations of today's European Union
c.The european economic integration in world's context (Bretton Wood, GATT etc.).

3.Budget of the European Union (allowance 2/4)
 
a.Basic characteristics and qualities of the EU's budget + comparison to other important budgets in the world
b.The major incomes and expenditures of the EU's budget
c.Any reforms of the EU's budget - when, why, which reforms?

4.EURO - history, present and the future of european currency (allowance 4/2)
 
a.Historical roots and reasons of euro
b.OCA theory and its application to today's eurozone
c.Today's troubles of eurozone and the possible (?) solutions

5.Economic crisis in the European Union (allowance 2/6)
 
a.Major sources and reasons of the economic crisis after 2008
b.Fiscal policy of EU's members and the problem of budget-deficits
c.The role of the ECB - its steps against the crisis after 2008

6.One currency, 17 different executives - the differences among the eurozone's members (allowance 2/2)
 
a."Draft-horses" of today's eurozone - overview of eurozone's "healthy" economics
b.So called "PIGS" - why is there such a economic slump?
c.The future of the eurozone - enlargement or collapse?

7.The main strategic documents of the European Union (allowance 2/2)
 
a.Lisbon strategy - goals and reasons of failures
b.Europe 2020 - grounds of such strategy, goals, specific projects
c.Aging of the EU's population - the longterm problem of the EU. How to react?

8.Common Foreign and Security Policy of the European Union (allowance 2/2)

b.CFSP in reality - case studies

9.The future of the European Union (allowance 4/2)
 
a.Lisbon Treaty - what has been changed and what will be changed?
b.Possible ways for the future: USE, economic cooperation, Europe a la Carte, collapse of the EU

Course completion:
1. Presentation of own case study (topics will be defined during 1st class). Without presented research, it's not possible to write the final exam and therefore it's not possible to pass the course.
