Aims of the course:
Introduction to basic genetic mechanisms on the molecular and cellular level. Gaining knowledge about the molecular basis of genetic variability and the possibilities of applications of this knowledge.
Course contents:
1.Cells and genomes (allowance 2/2)
2.Informational macromolecules (nucleic acids, proteins), structure of DNA a chromosomes (allowance 2/2)
3.Gene and genome structure in animals, genomics (allowance 2/2)
4.Basic genetic mechanisms - replication, transcription and a translation (allowance 2/2)
5.Regulation of expression of genetic information (allowance 2/2)
6.Mechanisms of DNA repair in cells, mutation and recombination (allowance 2/2)
7.Genetic polymorphism, genetic markers - types; single nucleotide polymorphisms (allowance 2/2)
8.Basic methods in molecular biology, recombinant DNA (allowance 2/2)
9.Application of molecular genetics in breeding (genome analysis, genome manipulation) (allowance 2/2)
10.Using markers, candidate genes, gene and QTL mapping, whole genome analysis, genomic selection (allowance 2/2)
11.Structural genomics (genome sequencing) a functional genomics (gene expression study); proteomics (allowance 2/0)
12.Current Topic - GMO animals and animal cloning (allowance 2/0)
13.Excursion to the laboratory of cell genetics (allowance 0/4)

Assessment methods:
Exam. The exam consists of a written and an oral part. The written part consists of 20 questions. The written examination is reserved for 45 minutes. Each question is evaluated by 2 points. At least 25 points are needed to progress to the oral part of the exam. At the oral part, the student responds to the two questions. Theoretical knowledge in accordance with the syllabus is required. They are also required knowledge of the exercises (problem solving). Students prepare and present a seminar paper.
