Aims of the course:
The main objectives are to introduce students to the horse morphology and physiology.
 
Course contents:
1.Skeletal system; the structure of bone, joint and ligament; bone development; the function of osteoblasts and osteoclasts; the control of calcium metabolism in the body (allowance 0/3)
2.Back and lumbar muscles; limb muscles; the structure of muscle; the structure of muscle fiber; mechanisms of muscle contraction and relaxation; the control of muscle contraction; types of muscle fibers; muscle fatigue; muscle adaptation to movement (allowance 2/3)
3.Respiration system; respiration muscles; main respiration processes participated in gas exchange; factors affecting respiratory resistance; movement effect on respiration frequency; factors affecting blood distribution in lungs; movement effect on alveolar diffusion; factors affecting blood pressure in lung blood vessels; training effect on oxygen absorption (allowance 3/3)
4.Cardiovascular system; properties of heart muscle; factors affecting heart rate; relationships between heart rate and muscle fatigue; factors affecting blood pressure; the neuroendocrine control of cardiovascular system; cardiovascular adaptation to training (allowance 2/3)
5.Blood composition and function; factors affecting hematocrit value; movement effect on leukocyte concentration; movement effect on biochemical parameters of blood plasma; imunology (allowance 2/6)
6.Homeostasis; movement effect on body temperature; mechanisms of temperature releasing; the thermoregulation role of respiration system; the effect of ambient temperature on blood distribution in the body; relationships between body temperature and sweating; movement effect on body water and ion deprivation; the endocrine regulation of water and ion in the body (allowance 2/3)
7.Sense system; eye structure; dichromatic vision; the field of view; the structure of hearing organ; the frequency of perceived sounds; the structure of olfactory system; odor perceiving (allowance 0/3)
8.Gastrointestinal system; the function of saliva; digestion in stomach; digestion and resorption in the small and large intestine; factors affecting microorganisms in the large intestine; factors affecting peristalsis of the small and large intestine; intermediary metabolism of sugars, lipids and proteins; the endocrine control of intermediary metabolism; the effect of movement on the degradation of nutrition in the body (allowance 3/6)
9.Female reproductive system; puberty; estrous cycle; follicle growth and maturation; ovulation; the structure of oocyte; the development and regression of corpus luteum; the neuroendocrine control of changes in ovaries and uterus during the estrous cycle; estrous behavior; the neuroendocrine control of the estrous behavior; seasonal effects on changes in ovaries and on sexual behavior in mares (allowance 4/3)
10.Male reproductive system; the function of seminiferous tubules in testis; spermiogenesis; the structure of sperm; the development and function of Sertoli and interstitial cells; the neuroendocrine control of changes in testes; the function of epididymis and accessory sexual glands; the sexual behavior in stallions; penis erection; ejaculation; seasonal effects on changes in testes (allowance 2/3)
11.Mating; the transport of sperm in the female reproductive system; sperm capacitation; the fertilization of oocyte; embryo development; the transport of embryo in the oviduct and uterus; mechanism of the maternal recognition of pregnancy; embryo nidation in the uterus; the development and regression of endometrial caps; the development and regression of primary and secondary corpus lutei; the development of fetus and placenta; embryo and fetus nutrition; neuroendocrine control during pregnancy; parturition; the neuroendocrine control of parturition; maternal behavior; lactation (allowance 4/0)

-Skills in the detection of the signs of oestrus and foaling
-Skills of tissue microscopy in horses
-Skills to search and process morphological and physiological studies in horses from scientific databases

Assessment methods:
Evaluation of participation in seminars; three tests in 6th, 9th and 12th week of the semester (the criterion to pass is 60% correct answers on each test); submission, presentation and defence of a seminar work prepared from the study obtained from the scientific database are compulsory for credit. Credit is compulsory for final exam participation. The course is finished with 45 minutes written test (40% of the total mark) and 20 minutes oral exam (60% of the total mark).
