Course title: Information sources and software

Course objective:
Students will acquire knowledge and skills that are the basics of working with information resources (scientific libraries, information centers, scientific journals, electronic journals, the Internet - Virtual Library - MEDLINE, Science Citation Index, Current Contents Connect, Web of Science, Scopus, ...) and use of internet networks for obtaining scientific information. Skills to find information, work with their resources and their integration into the text. To gain knowledge and skills to cite sources (list of literature cited in the text and bibliographic reference) and become familiar with copyright law.
Get skills when editing text in MS Word, creating tables and calculations used in MS Excel and MS PowerPoint presentations, creating vector graphics in Adobe Illustrator, raster graphics in Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Flash animation and basic web site creation and use of Cascading Style Sheets .
 
Course content:
1.Fundamentals of information technology, principles of information gathering and processing procedures (allowance 4/2)
 
a.Information sources -- libraries, legislation in information sources (law library, copyright law).
Electronic information sources -- CD and on-line, internet, web browsers.
b.Genetic information sources -- books, magazines, internet. Web of Science, Medline.

2.Web Site creating (allowance 4/2)
 
a.Web sides I -- XHTML
b.Web sides II - CSS (Cascading Style Sheets)

3.Bitmap and vector graphics for creation of graphical information, basic of animation (allowance 4/4)
 
a.Workflow in programmes - Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator
b.Workflow in programmes - Adobe Flash

4.Text editors, spreadsheets, presentations (allowance 10/5)
